FAQs

What kind of student do you serve?
The FrostigSchool serves up to 120 students in grades 1-12 within the average range of intellectual potential who have learning disabilities and related learning problems (including dyslexia, non-verbal learning disabilities, ADHD, and Aspergers) and can benefit from a modified academic school program.  We recognize that many children with learning disabilities also have emotional problems and other needs.  We accept and serve these children as long as their emotional and/or other needs do not disrupt the learning environment or require an intensity of service or attention beyond the scope of the program.

How are you different than other schools?

  • We serve more complicated kids than other non-public schools for students with learning disabilities
  • We are state certified and WASC accredited
  • We provide a modified curriculum aligned to state framework and standards
  • Our secondary school program includes a Transition program focusing on our “success attributes” and building skills for post-secondary life
  • Electives in art, music, drama, computer and film
  • The full-time social skills specialist works with each class
  • We have a “Learn and Return” philosophy

How does Frostig meet each student’s needs?
It is our goal to assist students to improve skills, identify strengths, and develop strategies to compensate for areas of challenge. To insure that each student’s needs are met, we feel it is essential to develop an individualized educational plan.  This plan is based on an understanding of each student’s strengths and weaknesses and outlines a course of action to help the child reach his or her highest potential.

We believe in establishing and maintaining a learning environment that allows students to feel comfortable taking risks.  As part of risk-taking, it is essential to help students develop positive strategies to cope with frustration.  Our research supports the conclusion that students who are successful have an understanding that adversity is a normal part of the learning process.

Can we visit the school?
The FrostigSchool has scheduled visits for prospective parents and professionals who are interested in touring the school program. Reservations for tours may be made by contacting the school’s Principal, Tobey Shaw, at (626) 791-1255.

Are there entrance exams?  Do you test students?

No - we request a copy of the most recent psychoeducational evaluation (within the last three years.)  This may have been completed as part of the most recent triennial assessment by your school district or one you had completed privately.  Staff may complete informal assessments (reading and math inventories and a writing sample) during the day of the student visit.

When can we apply?
The FrostigSchool has rolling admissions; you may apply at any time.

Do you have any openings for the 2009-2010 school year?
